Summary

Ever wonder what happens to those Final Girls? After the cops eliminate them as suspects, after the press releases their brace-faced, pizza-cheeked, bad-hair-day class photos that inevitably get included on the cover of the true crime book? After the candlelight vigils and the moments of silence, after someone plants the memorial shrub?” For Lynette Tarkington, it’s been a support group。 Her, five other final girls, a therapist。 Close to twenty years。 Today’s the last day for group, but Lynne doesn’t know it yet。 It’s also going to be the last day for one of the group。 And maybe the final day for all of the final girls, because someone’s been planning a nasty surprise for them for a long time。

Overall Rating: 4/5‘The Final Girl Support Group’ by Grady Hendrix is a fun, fast paced and different read - much like the authors other successful past releases。The book itself is about ‘the last girls standing’ in horror stories, you know the ones? Covered in blood and surrounded by the wreckage of all that she ever knew, but still breathing。 That standard trope。 Well in this world there a whole bunch of them who have managed to crawl out of the fires, outsmart axe wielding murderers at camps Overall Rating: 4/5‘The Final Girl Support Group’ by Grady Hendrix is a fun, fast paced and different read - much like the authors other successful past releases。The book itself is about ‘the last girls standing’ in horror stories, you know the ones? Covered in blood and surrounded by the wreckage of all that she ever knew, but still breathing。 That standard trope。 Well in this world there a whole bunch of them who have managed to crawl out of the fires, outsmart axe wielding murderers at camps and escape crazy ghost mask wearing boyfriends and SURVIVE。 However, this form of surviving is by attending a monthly support group with all the other final girls。Lynette, one of the final girls is barley hanging on, she goes to the support meetings, but her life consists over obsessing over how a killer might get her next and planning her escape plans。 When suddenly the group falls apart and it looks like someone is out to put an end FINALLY to the girls everyone is a suspect and Lynette does not know who to trust。This was such a clever book and I really enjoyed it。 I am a massive horror movie fan so really appreciated all the nods to the cult classics we all know and love but with a Hendrix spin on it。 The characters were all wonderful, not all likeable (like really not likeable!!!) but loved all the same as each final girl added something different。Much like with any Grady Hendrix book I have read it is written perfectly, some authors you just really gel with writing styles and this is one of them for me。Overall a wonderful read and one that I fully recommend! Thanks to NetGallery and the publishers at Titan Books for the advance copy of the book。Publication Date: 13 Jul 2021 。。。more

This one is out July 13th although it seems you can get your hands on copies from certain places now!The Final Girl is one of my favourite tropes in horror so when I saw that one of my favourite authors was releasing a book all about it, I was SO excited! It’s such a brilliant idea。However, this ended up not being what I expected and was more of a mystery/thriller rather than a horror。 Which was a little disappointing for me as jump scares are imperative in slasher and their sub-genres however I wasn’t frightened at all reading this one。 I did like all the horror movie references (lots of obscure ones that make you feel really chuffed when you notice) and how can I not appreciate nods to my favourite film, Scream。 Fellow horror buffs will notice as-well that the characters are Hendrix’s own creations but are named after the actors who portrayed their movie counterparts。Overall, I would still recommend and would love to see a movie adaptation of this。 The final act for the Final Girl’s was one of my favourite parts and I can picture it so clearly。 3。5 stars! 。。。more

I couldn’t name a single final girl。 Unless there’s some weird dark web thing around this the premise doesn’t pass muster - who knows any REAL final girls? Can you name one? Do they have infamy where weirdos stalk them regularly (and aren’t there laws against that?) It wasn’t plausible in ANY way - first that these girls exist。 Most serial killers IRL aren’t discovered by a “final girl” or killed by one。 Then the fact that 6 of them all live in Los Angeles? Uhhh… not plausible。From there my issue was with our protagonist who basically runs around town like a chicken with her head cut off (figuratively, not literally), accusing person after person and failing and flailing。 I understood her mental health and OCD tendencies from surviving a horrible attack, but since the book did t focus on that she came across as just stupid。 This book had such potential but just didn’t deliver for me。The writing is shambolic - so much that I often had to review what I just read, with flashbacks and flash forwards, it’s important to give the reader context and it seemed disorganized and unconnected in places。 Scattered。 Toward the end, I basically kind of hoped they ALL died。 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆𝗠𝗮𝗴𝘀。𝗰𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻。📚𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: Mystery😍𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨: If you “light” read and suspend a lot of disbelief。 🙅‍♀️ 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨: Anyone like me who can’t handle lack of realism。Thank you to the author, NetGalley and Berkeley Publishing for my advanced copy in exchange for my always-honest review。 。。。more

I’m gonna be in the minority with this one and I’m totally fine with it。 I didn’t love this despite it being one of my most anticipated of the year。 I’m rounding up to 3 stars from 2。5 based solely on the little scripts and notes etc that were included。 The titles of the chapters were kinda cool too-they were all reminiscent of 80s/90s slasher films like Scream。 I loved Southern Book Club Guide to Slaying Vampires so I went into this with possibly too high of expectations and it didn’t even come I’m gonna be in the minority with this one and I’m totally fine with it。 I didn’t love this despite it being one of my most anticipated of the year。 I’m rounding up to 3 stars from 2。5 based solely on the little scripts and notes etc that were included。 The titles of the chapters were kinda cool too-they were all reminiscent of 80s/90s slasher films like Scream。 I loved Southern Book Club Guide to Slaying Vampires so I went into this with possibly too high of expectations and it didn’t even come close sadly。 If you’re a fan of camp, this is for you。 Lynette views herself as not a “real” Final Girl even though she has created her entire current existence based upon being one。 She lives in a barred apartment and takes 3 hours to get anywhere so she can make sure no one is following her and is on constant alert that someone is going to kill her。 The only people she interacts with are the other girls in the support group that her therapist created for her and all the other survivors of serial killers。 The group has been going for several years and none of them seem to be getting any better。 There is very little in the way of growing by any of the girls and the therapist seems completely unprofessional。 There’s a lot of violence and slashing and the camp sort of balances it out I guess, but it just didn’t work for me overall。 This was too “goofy” to take seriously as a horror story but not goofy enough to be not a thriller either。 Still not sure where to classify it。 I think it’ll probably make a cool Netflix movie though。 Thanks to Berkley Publishers and Netgalley for this Arc in exchange for my review。 。。。more

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix needs to be made into a movie! It was full of action and suspense and I loved all the nods to horror in the 1980’s and 1990’s。 There are some really deep thoughts and ideas in the book too, which I found surprising。 You can not think too deeply and just enjoy the horror movie vibe or actually think about some of the things (like with Crazy Chrissy) and fall into a deep rabbit hole。 To me, that shows a lot of depth in a story。I also thought it was amu The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix needs to be made into a movie! As a fan of Grady Hendrix and the humorous horror-filled worlds he creates, I couldn't wait to read his latest, The Final Girl Support Group。 This book wasn't quite as funny as his others, more subtle-y so, but I think that lends to the fact that this work is an homage to pop culture slasher films。 Simply more deadly。 Like his books, Horrorstor and My Best Friend's Exorcism, The Final Girl Support Group is packed with pop culture insides that make the setting and characters like a trivia game fo As a fan of Grady Hendrix and the humorous horror-filled worlds he creates, I couldn't wait to read his latest, The Final Girl Support Group。 This book wasn't quite as funny as his others, more subtle-y so, but I think that lends to the fact that this work is an homage to pop culture slasher films。 Simply more deadly。 Like his books, Horrorstor and My Best Friend's Exorcism, The Final Girl Support Group is packed with pop culture insides that make the setting and characters like a trivia game for readers。 Fans of the horror genre will love how he references their favorite flicks。 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre becomes Panhandle Meathook。 Scream becomes Stab。 Even the author's acknowledgments read like a Simpson's credit reel of a scary movie。 If you're looking for some gory escapist reading, The Final Girl Support Group is a super quick read。 Each chapter break includes some bonus visual content as well - excerpts from reviews of the horror films made off the girls' darkest moments, transcripts of witness testimony, and more。 Even the chapter titles themselves play on slasher series franchise titles。 There are a lot of characters and film plot references so you may need to make a cheat sheet to keep all the names straight, but the personalities of the final girl support group are strong enough that they become more clear as you keep reading。 Despite references to so many classic horror films, the ending may still surprise you。 Hendrix fills the book with plenty of twists and delightful deceits。 Don't let that sway you that all the girls are safe though。 Blood will be shed! Great book! This is a story about women who survive horrible, horrible crimes。 They band together in a support group and are then being picked off one by one。 Someone out there wants to do away with each of them。 This story follows them through all the things that happen in their journey to save themselves and come out in the end a little worse for wear but alive。Fast paced story and fun to read!

too long in the middle, and hendrix still loves his manic, gummy plotting too much for me。 but! I can't deny he's a talented storyteller。 idk if it's the quality of the work itself, or that i'm getting wise to some of his tricks, but I like his earlier titles much more than this and last year's southern book club's guide to slaying vampires (or whatever the title was lol)。 I don't mean this as a diss but I almost think he'd be better served as a screenwriter。 less room for messy, meandering plot too long in the middle, and hendrix still loves his manic, gummy plotting too much for me。 but! Such an interesting concept, but it didn't hit the mark for me。 Perhaps I was expecting too much。 I've never read anything else by Hendrix。 I've heard good things, so I'd consider checking out other books。Action was well paced, and I enjoyed the nod to classic horror movies, but I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters。 I'm not quite sure if that was due to the writing style itself or the lack of character development, as there was no real depth to the cast。 Also, I read a Kindle Such an interesting concept, but it didn't hit the mark for me。 Perhaps I was expecting too much。 I've never read anything else by Hendrix。 I've heard good things, so I'd consider checking out other books。Action was well paced, and I enjoyed the nod to classic horror movies, but I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters。 I'm not quite sure if that was due to the writing style itself or the lack of character development, as there was no real depth to the cast。 Also, I read a Kindle version of this, and I wasn't able to read the article snapshots, transcripts, etc。 that are in between the chapters。 Perhaps that will be different (and easier to read) in the finalized version, as I did read an advance copy。 Had I been able to read them, I might have connected more with the book and characters。 I'm not sure。 It just felt disjointed overall。 Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review。 。。。more

I love Grady Hendrix's writing and this book is no different。 It was a lot of fun to read。 If you're a fan of slasher horror I think you'll have a great time with this。 The main reason I've rated it slightly lower is that I didn't enjoy the way social issues were incorporated。 There's a lot of really interesting things you could say about misogyny in the slasher genre, and I appreciate what Grady Hendrix was trying to do, but it was all very simplistic and lacked the nuance that it seemed to be I love Grady Hendrix's writing and this book is no different。 It was a lot of fun to read。 If you're a fan of slasher horror I think you'll have a great time with this。 The main reason I've rated it slightly lower is that I didn't enjoy the way social issues were incorporated。 There's a lot of really interesting things you could say about misogyny in the slasher genre, and I appreciate what Grady Hendrix was trying to do, but it was all very simplistic and lacked the nuance that it seemed to be attempting。 It wants to make a point about violence and manipulation against women, but it does so in a way that completely erases women's own autonomy。 I also didn't appreciate that it fell heavily into the Bury Your Gays trope。 I expect a lot of death in horror but it was notably drawn out and unnecessary。 Overall I have very mixed feelings about this book because I truly did enjoy it, but it's not without its imperfections。 Thanks to Titan Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。Follow me on my Blog, Twitter, and Instagram。 。。。more

I do not read a lot of horror but the female-focused premise of The Final Girl Support Group, promising a subversion of the 'final girl' trope, intrigued me。 I have also heard very good things about Grady Hendrix and as a result, always wanted to give one of his books a go。 And so I did - and read it all in essentially one sitting。 Because I don't read a ton of horror, I can't comment on where this really lies in the genre。 It does feel like a thriller in many parts, especially given how propuls I do not read a lot of horror but the female-focused premise of The Final Girl Support Group, promising a subversion of the 'final girl' trope, intrigued me。 I have also heard very good things about Grady Hendrix and as a result, always wanted to give one of his books a go。 And so I did - and read it all in essentially one sitting。 Because I don't read a ton of horror, I can't comment on where this really lies in the genre。 It does feel like a thriller in many parts, especially given how propulsive the narrative is。 There is some gore, but not as much as I was expecting。 TFGSG was also excellently twisty and though I predicted parts, I did not predict others! Hendrix has a really great writing style that includes a sprinkling of comedy, something I really enjoyed - for instance, heroine Lynette is really devoted to her house plant, which is a lighter thread of throughout a high-stakes and dark novel。 There's also a range of unique female characters in this novel, and all of them have such interesting interpersonal dynamics with each other。 These interactions were definitely a highlight of the novel。Definitely glad I gave it a go and would recommend to others。 Would also make an excellent movie。 Shall be looking into reading more Grady Hendrix! > 4。2 stars 。。。more

Die hard 80s slasher movie fans will, I'm sure, lose their minds over this book。 It's a slasher horror book taking the perspective of "what if all the final girls from all the slasher movies had group therapy together?" It also pays homage to slasher movies throughout the entire book。 It zooms in a few of the "final girls" personal lives - kind of a "where are they now?" but from the inside。 Most of them are super messed up, living in constant fear, judging the other final girls about how they s Die hard 80s slasher movie fans will, I'm sure, lose their minds over this book。 It's a slasher horror book taking the perspective of "what if all the final girls from all the slasher movies had group therapy together?"
